How It Works
How does the check-in system work?
You choose how often to check in: every few days, weekly, or monthly. A quick tap in the app, a reply to an email, or even fully automatic from your Mac or PC. As long as you check in, your messages stay safely stored. If you stop, delivery begins.
What if I forget to check in?
Don't worry. You'll receive multiple reminders by email and push notification before your deadline. After the deadline, there's a grace period too. Your messages are only delivered after all of that has passed.
I scheduled a birthday message. Will it be sent on that day even if I'm fine?
No. Scheduled messages (birthdays, anniversaries) are only delivered if two things happen: the date has arrived and you've stopped checking in. If you're still checking in, the message stays stored until it's actually needed.
What's the difference between an immediate message and a scheduled message?
An immediate message is delivered whenever you stop checking in, with no specific date attached. A scheduled message is tied to a date (like a birthday or anniversary) and will only be delivered if that date has arrived and you're no longer checking in. You choose which type when creating each message.
Trust & Subscription
What happens to my messages if I can no longer pay my subscription?
If your messages need to be sent while your subscription is active, we'll deliver them. Period. The service you paid for will be fulfilled regardless of future payments. For complete peace of mind, our Lifetime plan means this is never a concern.
What if I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel anytime. Your messages remain stored and your delivery commitments stay active through your subscription period. If delivery happens while your subscription is still active, your messages will reach your loved ones as promised.
Is there a free option?
Yes. Your first message is completely free with no time limit or credit card required. Additional messages need a subscription, starting at $4.99/month with a 30-day free trial.
Privacy & Security
How private are my messages?
Both security modes use military-grade encryption. In Guardian mode, your messages are encrypted on your device and even LastingNote cannot read them. In Automatic mode, we manage the encryption for convenience, but your messages are still fully encrypted.
What's the difference between Guardian and Automatic mode?
The main difference is an extra safety step. In Guardian mode, before LastingNote ever sends your messages, a trusted person you choose must confirm that you're truly unable to check in. It's also more secure cryptographically: your messages are encrypted on your device with a key only you hold, so not even LastingNote can read them. Automatic mode skips that human verification — we handle encryption and delivery for you, so messages go out automatically once you stop checking in. Both are secure; it comes down to whether you want maximum protection and control, or simplicity.
Can I change my security mode later?
No. Your security mode is permanent once chosen because it protects the integrity of your encryption. If you need a different mode, you can create a new account.
Practical Questions
What platforms can I check in from?
iOS app, web dashboard, macOS menu bar, Windows system tray, email reply, SMS reply, or CLI. You can also set up automatic check-ins from your Mac or PC so you don't have to think about it.
Can I edit or delete a message after creating it?
Yes, as long as it hasn't been delivered yet. Once delivered, messages cannot be recalled.
Who can see my messages before they're delivered?
In Guardian mode, nobody. Not even LastingNote. In Automatic mode, your messages are encrypted in storage and only decrypted at the moment of delivery. No one at LastingNote ever reads your messages.
How do I reset my password?
In both security modes, you reset your password using the 12-word recovery phrase you received during account setup. Keep it safe — without your recovery phrase, your password cannot be reset, and in Guardian mode your encrypted data cannot be recovered.
